Why Should I Become A Member Of RSU Public TV?

You might find yourself flipping through 250 cable channels on your tv set and ask the question, "Why invest in public television?". It's a great question that nearly everyone of our members have asked themselves before joining. With an uncertain economy, weary growth in the employment rate and political uncertainty, millions of American's are having to make decisions on how to better spend their money.

It seems that one of the first novelties people are examining more closely is their use of media and entertainment. More families find themselves staying in for the evening, rather than venturing out to the malls and movie theatre's, instead opting for cheaper television and film entertainment.

While this new shift in how we spend our time does result in a savings, it's not without it's consequences! Television, especially primetime, isn't as safe as it used to be. Profanity, vulgarity, violence, and even nudity are becoming more and more common on the airwaves. It seems that our economic downturn has not only hurt our pocketbooks, but also our families moral integrity. Enter RSU Public TV!

As a public media provider, we rely on our loyal viewers to aide us financially in bringing wholesome, quality education and entertainment to Oklahomans. While Public Media has always provided a priceless service to people all over the world, funding it has never been easy. This is due largely in part to the fact that you will never see commercial breaks in the middle of a program on public television. Even station promotional materials are only shown between programs. Commercial networks support their operations, not by the programs they air or produce, but by the expensive commercial space they sell to advertisers. This brings a big challenge to public media. How do we provide quality, commercial-free programming, and still maintain financial stability to offer this service long-term?

The solution to this question has been met largely by both government and private grants, state and federal funding and local and national underwriters. While these funding sources allow public media operations to be succesful, programming aquisition funds are still hard to come by. This is why RSU Public TV needs you to partner with us. All membership pledge dollars are applied directly towards purchasing new, engaging programming for our viewing audience. Additionally, we encourage members to "vote" with their contributions. This means that when a new or existing member donates to our tv station, we also welcome feedback as to their favorite types of programs and even specific ones. In doing so, you tell our programming staff what types of programs you want to see more of, and then we work with programming distributors and our local producer's to meet that demand.
